CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Rowan knew she could outmaneuver and outrun the SUV on her tail, but dammit, she didn’t want to make it look easy. Kyle would question where her skills came from. The last thing she wanted, especially after all the “future” talk he’d been doing about them, was for him to know what she really did for a living…and where he’d most likely find her. She’d endured enough hate in her life, and didn’t want Kyle’s dislike and mistrust of her added to that pile. Once she dropped him off and he understood her role in what was happening, if he found her, it would be to rage.

Rowan didn’t think she could handle that, considering she was so close to falling in love with the man. And wasn’t that a fucked-up admission?

“Hang on,” she said, putting her concentration back on the road and giving the gas another punch; utilizing the engine’s full capacity as it triggered the supercharger she’d installed; a cold air induction system that lent an incredible boost to her already modified powerplant and drivetrain.

“Cripes, Rowan,” Kyle yelped, grabbing for the “oh-shit handle”. “What the hell are you doing? Give me a weapon, goddammit. Then you can slow down and I can shoot the shit out our tail.”

“Not happening,” she told him, gritting her teeth. She hated prevaricating, and shit was about to get sticky. “I don’t have one, remember? Because I don’t have a non-resident permit to carry in Texas.” Would Kyle know that the law was highly subjective; that any out-of-stater legally licensed could easily get a pass from the pro-gun locals?

“Well hell, Rowan.” His jaw was tight as she risked a glance at him. “What do you propose we do?”

She had this, and she needed to make it look good, but not too good. Just competent enough that he wouldn’t try to take over.

She made a point of glancing at the GPS on her dash. “There’s a right turn a few hundred yards ahead,” Rowan told him, gritting her teeth. “We’re taking it hard.”

“Then what?” he bit out, clearly trying to back off and give her headspace so she could drive.

“There’s a bunch of dirt roads off that one. We’ll play it by ear and try to lose them.”

“Dammit, woman. Give me a gun. You have to have one stashed somewhere.”

“No,” she gritted out. “I don’t. And even if I did, we’re not going to make an incident out of this unless things look like they’re going to go completely south.”

When nothing more came out of Kyle’s mouth, Rowan gave all her attention over to driving. When they came to the right she’d mentioned, she took it hard and fast, fishtailing, but righting her car within seconds to punch the accelerator again.

“Yeehaw!” she yelled, thrusting a fist into the air at the rush of adrenaline that hit her system. She glanced over and saw a slight smile quirk at Kyle’s lips. He felt it, too.

“They’re headed into the dirt,” she stated with satisfaction as she glimpsed their tail in the rearview, skidding off the road.
